In 2024 the Citizens League embarked on a project in partnership with the League of Minnesota Cities and the Association of Minnesota Counties to explore the unique challenges and barriers to public service at the local level. This ambitious project conducted over several months and a multi-modal methodology of surveys and meeting with focus groups received direct feedback from over 1000 local government leaders and employees across Minnesota. The project explored themes such as education and pipelining the workforce, policy level changes impacting the work and autonomy of local governments, and organizational culture models that increase a sense of belonging.
In this workshop, join leaders from the Citizens League as they share the findings of this project and dive in to their recommendations, exploring how you can implement changes in your own organization as well as for the sector as a whole. By attending this workshop you will:
- Understand the themes impacting public sector participation, with an emphasis on non-elected roles.
- Discuss the findings of the report and apply recommendations to your organization and region.
- Consider next steps that strengthen the pipelining of talented people working across local government.
