Four Tips to Help Manage and Reduce Stress
Post by Garrett Johnson, LMCIT loss control consultant
Stress is a common facet of everyday life, resulting from a variety of factors. While we cannot eliminate stress completely, we can take proactive measures to reduce stress in our daily lives. Whether your occupation is physically demanding or you complete most of your workday from the office, consider these tips to reduce stress.
1. Move your body
Physical activity can reduce short-term and long-term signs of anxiety, improve your brain health, and enhance your overall quality of life. Exercising can be going for a walk, climbing the stairs, working out at the gym, taking a dance class, or even stretching. There are ample benefits to stretching before, during, and after work. Stretching your body increases blood flow, decreases risk of injury, and improves your physical ability to complete daily tasks.
2. Try breathing techniques
You can utilize breathing techniques as a quick and easy way to reduce your stress level. Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist and professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Standford University School of Medicine, studied a specific, effective breathing technique in reducing stress. Dubbed the Physiological Sigh, this method consists of a “double inhale” through your nostrils followed by an “extended exhale” through your mouth. A video on Breathing Techniques to Reduce Stress and Anxiety describes this method.
3. Get your zzz’s
Proper sleep is a crucial component in reducing stress. Getting the recommended seven or more hours of sleep for adults can reduce the risk of health problems, promote better decision-making, decrease cortisol levels, and restore balance to the body. Moreover, a sufficient sleep schedule can help in reducing long-term stress. Read more on the benefits of sleep and how to obtain healthy sleep habits.
4. Maintain a balanced diet
Implementing regular, well-balanced meals into your routine can provide immense benefits to your health, further reducing daily stress. Having adequate meals can increase energy, support muscle healing, and help with digestive functions. Consider preparing meals ahead to save time and money and allow for a more balanced diet.
