Minnesota’s Federal Funds Implementation Office is sharing insights to help your community lock in and make the most of these resources during this period of change.

As the federal administration prepares for its upcoming transition, now is a key time for cities that rely on federal funding to act. Minnesota’s Federal Funds Implementation Office is sharing insights to help your community lock in and make the most of these resources during this period of change.

Key steps for federal funding recipients

With the incoming administration likely to shift funding priorities, national partners strongly advise applicants and awardees of federal funds to act swiftly to “obligate” those funds —securing signed award agreements under the current administration whenever possible.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you’ve been awarded funds but lack a signed agreement.
    • Reach out to federal agency staff, and if necessary, your federal representatives, to expedite signing your award agreement before the transition.
  • If you’ve applied but haven’t heard back.
    • Contact federal agency staff and representatives to push for an award announcement in the coming weeks.

Why timing matters

The administration transition on Jan. 20, 2025, may bring significant staff turnover at federal agencies, with changes potentially starting earlier. Federal agency staff are actively working to finalize agreements nationwide, so it’s important to respond quickly if they request additional information or materials needed for your agreement.

Focus areas for federal funds

Minnesota’s Federal Funds Implementation Team has been concentrating on programs under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL or IIJA), and the CHIPS and Science Act. These initiatives represent major opportunities for communities across Minnesota.

If you have questions about these programs or any other federal funding, contact the Minnesota Management and Budget office at (651) 201-8000 or email Sam Rockwell, external funding coordinator with the Federal Funds Implementation Team, at [email protected]. The team can help you navigate this dynamic funding landscape and secure the resources your community needs.
