LMC Members Approve Fiscal Year Change

July 15, 2024

In addition to the fiscal year change, members voted to amend the League’s constitution and bylaws.

At the League of Minnesota Cities (LMC)’ annual business meeting on June 27, members voted in favor of adopting changes to the LMC constitution and bylaws, including a measure to align the fiscal year with the calendar year.

Fiscal year changes start in 2026

Under the approved changes to the constitution, the League’s fiscal year will change to Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 to align with the calendar year. This change will go into effect Jan. 1, 2026.

The League’s current fiscal year goes from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31. To account for the change in timing, fiscal year 2025 will be spread over 16 months instead of 12 months. Members will receive two membership dues invoices: one in August 2024 in an amount equal to four months of expenses, and a second invoice in January 2025 to cover the next 12 months. Starting in 2026, members will receive one annual invoice each January.

Additional changes to LMC constitution and bylaws

In addition to the fiscal year change, members voted to amend the League’s constitution and bylaws to:

  • Specify membership is only eligible to cities going forward.
  • Clarify permissible methods of written Board communications related to dues and meeting notices, as well as processes for Board meetings, elections, and membership.
  • Do simple clean-up of some of the language.
