The most important thing when looking for a mental health treatment provider is to seek out a professional who specializes in the treatment of trauma and PTSD.

Beyond finding an individual who specializes in PTSD treatment, it is important to find a provider where rapport can be easily developed and who makes one feel comfortable and safe. This may include considering whether the provider has the appropriate cultural competency for the person seeking treatment. For therapy to work, the individual needs to feel comfortable and understood.

A competent mental health treatment provider specialized in the treatment of trauma and PTSD can treat PTSD whether or not they have been through trauma themselves; what is important is that the provider understands how trauma events are thought about, so that skills can be taught to manage symptoms. It is always okay to look for a different provider if there is not comfort with that therapist or doctor.

Telehealth options

In today’s world of COVID-19, the use of telehealth for delivering a variety of healthcare services has been ever-increasing. There are also times when various challenges prevent an individual from engaging in in-person treatment. This may be due geographical issues due to where an individual resides, or there may not be a trained therapist locally available.

Telehealth may also be preferred because it is more convenient and is more confidential in the sense that no one will see the person coming in for treatment. Telehealth services allow a treatment provider and patient in separate locations to see each other and engage in a real-time two-way interaction. Secure video is used to deliver trauma-focused therapy, or the treatment choice of the individual, and is an effective alternative to in-person meetings.
