Typically, when seeking treatment for PTSD, specific PTSD symptoms and treatment options are discussed.
This discussion can include an explanation of what will happen in counseling, how the treatment can and will lead to symptom improvement, and why it works. PTSD is a complex constellation of symptoms and given that, some may experience one subset of symptoms more predominantly. Therefore, treatment should first focus on an assessment of symptoms to determine which are primary and most distressing for the individual and treating those specific symptoms. Treatment for PTSD can relieve symptoms by helping an individual confront and deal with the trauma experiences that have occurred in one’s life, a process that initially may seem counterintuitive or counterproductive for the individual experiencing PTSD-related symptoms.
However, by recalling and processing the emotions felt during an initial trauma event, proper mental health treatment helps reduce the powerful hold that experience or experiences have on one’s life.
During treatment, other thoughts and feelings about trauma, such as guilt and mistrust, are often discussed, as well as learning how to cope with intrusive memories, and addressing problems the trauma-related symptoms or trauma injury has caused. Many individuals who experience trauma-related symptoms also experience other mental health symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug abuse, or thoughts of suicide. Other common consequences of PTSD and symptoms of PTSD can be experiencing problems at work, in relationships, or with physical health. Receiving proper treatment for a trauma-related injury can also help with these other responses, symptoms, and difficulties.
It is natural to want to avoid trauma experiences and the feelings that come from those events. However, if one continually tries to numb, avoid, and push memories away, the post-traumatic injury will likely only get worse. Emotions cannot be avoided and numbed completely, and an ongoing attempt to do so often results in those emotions emerging (all too frequently in maladaptive ways) under stress. Not only is this effort exhausting, but the ongoing attempt at avoidance will often ultimately harm relationships, the ability to function, and quality of life.
